Dig-Dug. Punch Out!!. Star Wars. Pole Position. Outrun. Remember these arcade games? You can play them all on your PC. Just get yourself an Arcade Emulator - MAME - and you'll be playing these classics for free* in no time. It's getting a little harder to find the rom files. They used to be freely available until the companies saw that they could probably make money on them again.
Warning! MAME is an emulator. It reproduces, more or less faithfully, the behavior of various arcade machines. But hardware is useless without software, so images (files) of the ROMs which run on that hardware are required. Such ROMs, like all commercial software, are copyrighted. Therefore, it is illegal to possess a ROM image file if you do not own the original ROM. Needless to say, ROMs are not distributed together with MAME. Distribution of MAME with ROM images is a violation of copyright law and a violation of the MAME license, and it should be promptly reported to the authors so that appropriate legal action can be taken. With that being said, I still want to build an arcade cabinet. Just need a house to put it in first. Project Arcade would probably come in very handy.

Hey, I came across your post ia Technorati....damn...it's actually a very cool way of surfing the web (or the blogs) :) I can wholeheartedly recommend the book. I have it myself and even though I've spent years with MAME and building controllers I found it immensly useful, stuffed with info and tricks, well written and clearly laid out. Best read I've had in years! Don't hesitate to buy it...
